Mountains that touch the skies, varying coastlines, deep green forests, open pastures and desserts if you’re looking for it! But beyond the enchanting scenery, it's essential to understand the legal steps to ensure your union is recognized. Here's a comprehensive guide to help you navigate the process with ease and style.

Step 1: Applying for Your Marriage License

  • Residency: No need to be a Washington resident.

    • Online: Fill out the application on the county's website.

    • In-Person: Visit the county office.

    • By Mail: Request and submit a notarized application.

  • Waiting Period: There's a mandatory 3-day waiting period after your license is issued.

Step 2: Choosing Your Officiant

Washington State requires an authorized officiant to conduct your ceremony. Options include:

  • Ordained Ministers: Religious leaders from any denomination.

  • Judges or Justices: Active or retired.

  • Online-Ordained Individuals: Friends or family members can become ordained online through organizations like the Universal Life Church.

  • Super Cool Elopement Photographer like me….. just sayin’.

Here you have a few options, if you already have someone in mind and they’re committed to hiking up that mountain with you or meeting you on the beach, that’s great!! Maybe you just want to get the legal side over quickly and can run to the county office mid week to get it over with, kuddos to you! You could also write up lovely vows yourself and read them to one another where you choose to elope and have me (professional officiant) sign the license for you at no extra cost!

Officiant add-on; If you’re wanting something more customized I can help craft a unique ceremony with vows highlighting your love story and lifestyle in mind. Maybe you’re looking for a more nature themed ceremony or with your unique stories woven in, I can help you make it happen! I also help with filing afterwards so you can enjoy your newly wed bliss and know the paperwork is filed with the state correctly!

Step 3: Witnesses

Two witnesses are required to sign your marriage license. They must be at least 12 years old. If you're planning an intimate elopement without guests, don't worry—vendors, hikers, or even park rangers can serve as witnesses. This is always fun for both you and your signers!

Step 4: After the Ceremony

Post-ceremony, your officiant is responsible for returning the signed marriage license to the county office where it was issued. Once processed, you can request certified copies for your records and any necessary legal changes. This is where I come in as your officiant, I can return the necessary paperwork and you can go off and continue enjoying your newly wedded blissful adventure.

Bonus: Permits for Natural Settings

If you're dreaming of saying "I do" amidst Washington's natural beauty, certain locations may require permits:

  • National Parks: Places like Olympic National Park often require a Special Use Permit, especially for groups larger than five.

  • State Parks: A Discover Pass is needed for vehicle access, and some parks may require additional permits for ceremonies.

  • National Forests: Regulations vary, so it's best to check with the specific forest's administrative office.

This is where I come in! As your elopement photographer I can help assist obtaining any permits required, recommending vendors and housing in the area should you be eloping in an area further than a few hours drive from your house! Together we’ll weave a seamless experience, allowing you to focus on the magic of the moment!
